Answer

Some problems can truly only be resolved by reaching out to the library and asking for assistance, but there are some common issues that you may be able to resolve on your own.

Page not loading or completely blank? You could be encountering a security Firewall put up by your internet provider

  • If you are on campus, verify that you are connected to the internet over the eduroam WiFi network or the campus wired ethernet. The UofM-Guest WiFi network blocks all access to restricted library resources, causing pages to fail to load.
  • If you are off campus, you may encounter a company Firewall blocking access to restricted library resources if you are using internet provided by another organization (e.g., your workplace, business with public WiFi).

Browser settings can cause access issues

  • You may need to reset or clear your browser cache and cookies. Your browser's cache stores information to help pages load faster. Cookies are small files stored on your computer that save specific information (like passwords and site-specific preferences). If the data stored in the cache and cookies is old, it can prevent sites from loading correctly and clearing them can help resolve these issues.
  • Make sure your browser has enabled cookies and pop-ups
  • You may have a browser plugin or extension enabled that conflicts with a particular database. Try accessing the resource with a browser (e.g.ChromeFirefox) that does not have plugins or extensions installed and/or disabling browser plugins/extensions/add-ons.
    • Known issue with the Zotero browser extension/plugin. If you get an error while using VPN to access databases, and are using the Zotero browser extension/plugin, go to Zotero's settings to disable proxy redirection. For further help, contact the ITSS TechCenter Help Desk at 218-726-8847.

UMD account settings can cause access issues

  • Check your UMD directory suppression. If you’ve chosen “Suppress all”, or “Suppress my phone numbers, my address, my email” pick something else. After one day, reinstate full suppression of your data. (By then UMD will have received the necessary data to authenticate you.)
  • If you are a graduate student who's not currently enrolled, contact your department about enrolling in GRAD 0999 - Graduate School Active Status. Fees still apply, but not tuition. This will grant access to the library resources.
